View our webcast on the implementation of the event sustainability standard ISO 20121 by our clients Sydney Festival. This pre-recorded webcast is in four parts and tracks you through the requirements to implement ISO 20121: Event Sustainability Management Systems and shows you how Sydney Festival approached it.

We use the SEMS Tool to implement a management system. The next step after implementation is an independent audit of conformity to the requirements of the standard by a SEMS Auditor (Second Party Verification).

ISO 20121: Event Sustainability Management Systems is a framework supports the systematic and comprehensive identification and management of sustainability issues. It ensures the inclusion of strategies, policies, processes, systems and actions that intertwine to support and manage event sustainability issues more efficiently, effectively and professionally.

Best practice has moved away from ad-hoc issues management towards a systems approach. This new approach offers a strategic way to manage sustainability and embed continual improvement. It ensures the inclusion of strategies, policies, processes, systems and actions that intertwine to support and manage event sustainability issues more efficiently, effectively and professionally.

This seminar introduces participants to the recently released ISO 20121: Events Sustainability Management Systems, a document developed by participating ‘standards bodies’ from various countries around the world. The purpose of the standard is to provide a framework to implement a system to manage an event’s sustainable development issues.

Rather than being a checklist, ISO 20121 requires a systematic approach to addressing sustainable development issues in relation to event planning. It can be applied to an event organiser, a single event or a venue.

Successful implementation of an event sustainability management system will ensure continual performance improvement and systematic management of issues rather than an ad-hoc approach. It facilitates improved sustainability performance. Documentation of processes and disclosure of performance is key.

Led by Internationally recognised Event Sustainability expert, and Australian mirror committee members for the development of ISO 20121, Meegan Jones and Jane Fullerton-Smith, this seminar walks participants through the standards, using case studies to demonstrate implementation.

Representatives of the Australian event industry have participated in the development of recently launched international standard ISO 20121: Event Sustainability Management Systems.

These representative organisations, appointed by Standards Australia to the national committee, have recommended that the international standard be adopted and considered for an identical adoption as an Australian Standard.

Involvement in the sustainable event management movement is fast becoming expected of all event production and delivery. The committee believes the adoption of the International Standard by the Australian event industry will drive the change needed to see improved sustainability performance outcomes across the country.

By embracing the international standard, it sends a message to the business, sports and tourism sectors. There is an increasing ‘demonstration of sustainability’ expectation within tenders and bids particularly within inbound congresses, symposiums, large corporate conferences and exhibitions and large sporting events. International organisations are already looking to ISO 20121 and how it is included, embraced or proposed by potential event destinations and organisations.

“Internationally, event organisers are increasingly including social, environmental and economic factors as a key factor in their decision making process. Australia’s adoption of ISO 20121 shows we are ready and able to deliver on these expectations” – says Australian committee chair Giselle Radulovic, who represents Business Events Sydney.

Melbourne Information Session:
Members of industry associations that were part of the standard’s Australian committee are invited to attend an information session on ISO 20121 at no cost ($55 for non-members).Monday 26th November 2012, 2pm to 4pm, Melbourne CBD. Contact Us with your name and member organisation.
